Meet the Team: Helen Davis, Head of HR

Helen Davis is now reaching her first anniversary as Head of HR at GoodLaw Solicitors. In this Q&A, Helen chats with our marketing executive, Dannie Moore, about her career journey and reflects on her first year working at GoodLaw.

helen davis goodlawHow did you get into law?

This is my first role in a legal environment, although I have a number of friends working in the sector and had always been curious about what it was like. It has genuinely blown me away, I am enjoying it so much. I think there are some misconceptions out there that law firms are stuffy, or purely money-driven, and that’s not the reality at all. I’m so pleased to be working with a team of professionals who are equally committed to supporting their staff to grow, and to getting the best results for their clients.

How did you qualify as an HR practitioner?  What route did you take?

I went to Uni and studied Film, but decided that wasn’t for me so started off my career in a recruitment role, working on client sites for an RPO company. I loved recruiting but was interested in broadening my knowledge in other areas of HR, so I took an HR Assistant role at a music exam board and undertook my post-grad CIPD qualification in the evenings while working full time. It was hard work, but it really helped to be having hands-on experience whilst studying the academic theories behind the practice. It opened the door for the rest of my career.

What barriers did you encounter on your career journey so far, and how did you overcome them?

I wouldn’t describe it as a barrier, but it has been a challenge to keep my career on track while having young children. I’ve had to take a few diversions from the route and make some personal sacrifices because it was better for my family. That’s just life though isn’t it, it’s all a balancing act!

What brought you to Goodlaw? What do you value about working here?

A good friend of mine already worked here, she kept telling me how brilliant it was, and how she never got that Sunday night ‘work dread’ about Goodlaw. When an appropriate role came up I applied, and I’m so glad I did. She wasn’t wrong, I am always excited to get in and see what the day is going to bring. I really value being somewhere that genuinely strives to maintain a lovely working environment for its staff, it certainly makes my job easier!

What are the most valuable lessons you have learned?

HR-wise, always remain curious and try to keep focused on the issue you are trying to solve, as it’s easy to get lost in the detail. Work-wise, recognise that you won’t convince someone of your worth by giving them more of what they don’t already value – you spend a lot of your life at work and it’s important to be happy, so find somewhere that recognises your value and gets the real ‘you’.

How do you manage a work-life balance?

It is tricky to keep all the plates spinning but ultimately sometimes you just have to draw boundaries and say, sorry that can’t happen today. Start early, work efficiently, and if you’ve got a bit of time left that’s a bonus, make the most of it and go for a walk or swim etc. As long as the kids are alive, and I’ve spent time on everyone I need to even if I can’t give them everything they want right now, sometimes that has to be good enough!

What has been the best moment so far in your career?

I was really proud of obtaining my CIPD qualification, but the best feeling was being entrusted with my first stand-alone practitioner role at Goodlaw. It’s been an amazing journey being part of the Goodlaw family so far.
